Q&A On System Design

ー What is, “System Design Engineering?”
System Design Engineering is an academic field that defines environments surrounding an object such as global environment and human/society as systems to create an engineering value that is in harmony with the environments. It also aims to integrate component technologies that have been developed individually and uniquely as well as to harmonize technology and technology, technology and humans, and technology and society.
To be exact, systems in System Design Engineering mean hardware and software systems such as outer space, energy, environment, architecture, information, robot whereas designs mean design and control optimum systems to increase the value of elements that make up a system. While keeping a harmony with the environment, the new science and engineering that transform energy in the system space, process information/materials and revolves around humans is made possible.

ー What are features of System Design Engineering Department?
The System Design Engineering Department gives new perspectives that relate to arts, society and economy through gaining basic knowledge such as dynamics, energy, control and information. As a result, students can acquire methods to design and implement hardware and software that accommodate the comprehensive environment that consists of complex engineering systems such as environment, outer space, cities and lives.
Laboratories in the System Design Engineering Department are involved in researches on a wide range of fields such as the Nano field、mechatronics, the robotics field, energy, the environmental field, the sophisticated production technology field, the control systems field, the architectural and spatial design field, the information network field, and the outer space field, covering from Nano to outer space. Since such cross-field researches and studies are done, cooperation among many fields has resulted new technologies and theories that have a significant impact in the society.

ー What is the System Design Engineering Department like?
The System Design Engineering allows students to go out of the limited engineering technologies of which academic fields are divided vertically so that students can learn about technologies in the wide range of fundamental engineering. By gaining a wide range of knowledge cross-field, students can challenge themselves in a new design area that has never existed before. In order to make it possible, first, students mainly learn vigorously about “Dynamics” that is a basis for all kinds of engineering as well as engineering approaches such as system modeling (system extraction), analysis and synthesis (integration). From there, students further learn about various technologies such as machine, production, electricity, electron, energy, environment, information, telecommunication, and architecture/city.
Also, in System Design Engineering, students aim to create new manufacturing while always considering the society that receives the manufactured products in addition. By deepening the science and technology that have been developed so far to innovate system components, the Department nurtures engineers who can integrate and systemize while considering the society that receives the manufactured products.
System Design Engineering is not an academic that is wide and shallow. By learning various engineering basics thoroughly, the Department nurtures the real and proficient engineers who can work on leading challenges that engineers who are specialized in an individual field have a difficulty working on.
The System Design Engineering Department consist of faculties who like challenge themselves in new challenges that require the engineering basics. Also, the Department consists of students who are highly motivated in working on new challenges. The people are another driving forces in the System Design Engineering Department and achieve many worldly-famous research results.

ー For those who graduated from System Design Engineering, what kind of job do they get?
Every year, approximately 80 % of the students continue learning in the graduate school. Some of them even graduated with a doctor’s degree. The graduates are well accepted by employers in a wide variety of industries. For instance, those employers in the manufacturing industry such as electrical manufacturers, machinery manufacturers, the construction industry and the architectural design industry as well as lifeline companies such as power and gas, the information and communication industry, the financial/real estate industry and the country/local governments.
The strength of System Design Engineering is to be able to play an active role in many different fields by utilizing the basic knowledge of Energy, Mechanic, Manufacturing Technology, Control and Electrical Engineering. Also, by completing specified subjects and operational experience after graduation, it is possible to acquire an exemption of Qualified Electrical Engineer state examination and a certification to take the Examination for Class-1 Architects

ー I would like to be enrolled in the System Design Engineering Department. Which academic discipline should I be enrolled in?
You could be enrolled from Academic Discipline 4 and Academic Discipline 5.
The ratio of Academic Discipline 4 and Academic Discipline 5 is approximately 3:2.

ー What laboratories does System Design Engineering have? Who are the faculties?
Laboratories in the System Design Engineering Department offers a wide field of studies such as Nano field, mechatronics/robot field, energy/environment field, advanced manufacturing technology field, control systems field, architecture, architectural space design field, information network field, and outer space field. Cooperation and communications among laboratories are active. In fact, laboratories actively form a study group and training camp with other laboratories.
There are various faculties such as energetic young faculties and experienced faculties who are world-class achievers. All the faculties work on new challenges in education, research and System Design Engineering with passions.
